Breaching refers to a whale leaping clear of the water. It is a most impressive sight and always generates a big splash. Getting a good photo of a whale breaching is difficult but gives the opportunity to study and identify the species of whale. For photography, an autofocus lens helps but is not essential. Indeed the bottom set of photos were taken on manual focus. However, a motor drive is essential for the camera. You can normally get about three frames of the whale during a breach.
