White-throated Hawk

All photographs Paul Gale

The commonest buteo-type raptor is the Variable Hawk. The bird below was photographed from the Inca terraces a few miles south of Cuzco. The pictures are underexposed as I had the camera on auto-exposure (big mistake for doing flight shots against the sky!). The markings are consistent with White-throated Hawk. Comparison with juvenile Red-backed Hawk (photographed on the Falklands) shows completely different markings.
